Le punch, or ponch, called planteur in the French West Indies, is a cocktail containing fruit in pieces and the juice of these fruits. The recipe has several variations, alcoholic or not. Conventionally, the punch is served in a bowl called the punch bowl (punch bowl).
Its history dates back to the XNUMXth century. It was created by British sailors in Saint Lucia, in the Caribbean, who mixed tafia (rustic rum) with sugar, tea, cinnamon and lemon. These 5 ingredients inspired its name: “panch” in Hindi or in Persian meaning “five”. The drink was first in fashion in England before being very successful in France in the second half of the XNUMXth century. They now have many variations, depending on the country and culture.
